Sal had warmed a little towards Pickering after his kindness to Charlie. The doctor hadn’t been too concerned, but he had said it was a serious concussion. He drove Charlie away and it didn’t seem right there being only the two of them.

Their boss had told them to sort out the animals before they left that evening as he had to go into Ramsgate. There was still a trailer full of spuds to bag and things to do in the dairy, so they’d got plenty to get on with.

‘I hope he’s going to have a wash and shave before he goes,’ Daphne said as they returned to the barn.

‘He ain’t as bad as I thought. He did the right thing by Charlie – I’m surprised that in his state he managed to carry her into the house.’

‘Do you think Dr Willoughby has taken Charlie to hospital?’

‘I reckon so. He can’t expect Lady Harcourt to look after her.’ Sal looked around the barn, puzzled by the accident. ‘I can’t see how Charlie fell and hit her head so hard. There’s nothing here to trip over, is there?’

‘We’ll have to wait until she’s better and then she can tell us what happened.’

They’d filled three sacks with spuds when Sal heard the creak of an old bicycle. She straightened, rubbing her back and looked around. ‘Cor, would you look at that? He scrubs up lovely, don’t he?’

The farmer pedalled past them without looking in their direction; they both stared at him with interest. ‘He ain’t half as old as I thought and ain’t that bad looking neither. Maybe it took the shock of Charlie’s accident for him to pull himself together.’

‘Not good news for our friend, but possibly excellent news for the farm. We need someone to tell us what to do and how to do it now Charlie’s not here – two weeks’ training doesn’t make us experts in anything. Do you think you’ll be able to harness Star and drive us home?’

‘I know I can. I like horses, porkers, and hens – it’s just them blooming cows I’m not too fond of.’

‘You just had a bad experience the first time. If you like pigs, I don’t see how you can dislike cows, as they’re much nicer and don’t smell as bad. Have another go this afternoon. The six here have names. The only one who’s a bit feisty is Buttercup, but the others are sweethearts.’

‘I’ll give it a go. Let’s get these blooming spuds done as the lorry’s coming to collect them sometime this afternoon.’

As Sal was going to help in the dairy, Daphne suggested that she do the chickens, Sal do the pigs and they do the cows together.

‘Seems sensible to me. I want to get off on time tonight. I’m worried about Charlie.’

‘So am I, but if that Dr Willoughby said it wasn’t too serious then we have to believe he knows what he’s talking about,’ Daphne said.

Sal was now fond of the pigs and they were happy with their new routine.
